I learned some time back that there is a formula that relates to being able to express wisdom:

Knowledge + LOVE = Wisdom

Many of us presume that a person who has accumulated a great deal of knowledge is thereby likely to be a wise individual. We also assume that the well-educated and well-read who venture into the political sphere would also possess a modicum of wisdom when going about their political endeavours. The current geopolitical climate in the West would suggest otherwise.

We are now too clever to be able to survive without wisdom.

Interestingly, the word ‘politic’ can be defined in two contrasting ways:

1. Crafty or unscrupulous; cunning.
2. Sagacious, wise, or prudent esp. in statesmanship.

Ask yourself which of these definitions best describes the character of any one of our foremost political leaders in the West. Could it be that our current leaders, when first introduced to the subject of politics, whether at Eton or Princeton, read only the first definition and thought to themselves, “that’ll do for me”?

Where did the LOVE go?

Divine Love that powers all expressions of Consciousness

The LOVE in the above equation is the Divine Love that powers all expressions of Consciousness—this includes you!

We can view knowledge as something the ego-self likes to pursue. Think of how many general knowledge derived quiz programs on television trigger this deep-seated egocentric passion. The left brain just loves to show how clever it is!

But knowledge alone does not equal wisdom.

This is because true wisdom incorporates both the ego-self’s brain-based ability to acquire knowledge and the inner self’s heart-based ability to tap into the intuition that Divine Love provides us with.

So would you like to become wise?

To become a bit of a sage you do not need to cram your brain with knowledge. Wisdom does not rely on knowledge. It does though, rely on your connection to Divine Love.

E.F. Schumacher offers this gem of wisdom:

The truly educated [person] is not a [person] who knows a bit of everything… The “whole [person]” in fact, may have little detailed knowledge of facts and theories…. but [they] will be truly in touch with the centre. He/she will not be in doubt about [their] basic convictions, about [their] view on the meaning and purpose of their life. He/she may not be able to explain these matters in words, but the conduct of [their] life will show a certain sureness of touch which stems from this inner clarity [my emphasis]. 

Your connection to Divine Love (“the centre”) provides the key to unlocking the wisdom you already possess as a sentient being nested within the Oneness of Consciousness.
